Healthy Weight Loss? I Blame My Mother!

By Rory Mac

Is it your mother’s fault? Many people are surprised to find that the way they were brought up as children can have a huge impact on the chances of losing weight in later life. Once you have recognised these natural limitations which may be affecting you you can begin breaking down these ingrained habits. Read on to find out more about this often overlooked aspect of losing weight.

It doesn’t matter how mentally prepared you are to follow your weight loss regime, unfortunately there are some natural limitations which could affect your chances of success. Your childhood has a strong influence on the way you behave now and more specifically the way your mother may have subconsciously affected you when growing up.

There have been interesting studies which have shown that women who have issues with their food and who may be a little prone to follow the latest fad will tend to pass on their unhealthy habits subconsciously to their offspring.

Maybe your mother encouraged you to avoid certain foods or told you that you will get fat if you eat too much. If so you’re likely to approach food in a very black and white manner. Some foods good, others bad. You may do this at a subconscious level without even knowing you’re doing it.

Maybe, as a child, your diet included plenty of sugary and sweet things and you were not exposed to a wide variety of tastes to educate your palate. If this is the case you are now more likely in later life to crave those chocolate muffins and other foodstuffs which are high in calories. Again this could be a subconscious thing.

These ingrained habits have evolved over many years and can be very difficult to break out of. You need to begin by attempting to re-evaluate your attitude to food. You should try to develop a sensible and realistic eating plan which will help you achieve your weight loss goals. An added benefit will be that you will pass on this positive attitude to your kids.

Another physical limitation is your metabolism. Unfortunately some people just don’t burn calories as quickly as others. Those with a low metabolic rate can go downhill fast when it comes to trying to lose weight. This in turn can create negative feelings which compound the problem.

You will also be naturally limited by your motivation levels. If you’re like most people you will be bang up for it for the first week or so and then the enthusiasm starts waning somewhat. You need to try to transfer that initial motivation and project it into the future. You need to try to draw on this fantastic positive feeling every time you start losing your grip.
