It’s SAI-atica, not SKY-atica - but it still hurts!
Posted July 24th, 2011 by adminI was very excited when I got picked to run the marathon this year. The last few years, they moved it to a lottery system and getting in was no guarantee. In fact, I knew way more people that didn’t get in instead of those that did.
So, I consulted with my livonia chiropractor before I began running. In the past, I’ve had low back pain and it only sometimes got worse when I started to run more frequently. This time, I had been getting adjusted regularly, doing good about how much water I take in, and being very consistent about how and how often I stretch.
Stretching is a big help - but then I started to notice occasional tingling down the back of my leg. Then pain, then pain with the numbness and tingling. Yikes! What the heck is this? This is all referred to as sciatica. I know, because I looked it up on the internet. At least that’s what I told the mill creek chiropractor.
Of course, I was saying it incorrectly. I was saying “SKY-atica” but it’s pronounced more like “SAI-atica.” Thankfully, I was telling my neighbour the story when she corrected me. I would hate to spend my time going around saying that I have something that I don’t.
It always cracks me up when people say they have “prostrate” problems instead of “prostate.” Or that they injured their rotator “cup” instead of “cuff.” I didn’t want to be one of those people.
So, after consulting with my barrington chiropractor, I got a slightly different regimen of stretching and chiropractic care that has made all the difference. Back to running and back to attaining my goal of finishing a full marathon.
