It can be disconcerting for a young pup when his mother and littermates suddenly disappear, and then is suddenly moved to strange and confusing habitat with a whole range of new and unknown faces and scents.
And it’s not just puppies and young dogs. Fully grown dogs are not immune to bouts of anxiety caused by all the changes that seem to be taking place in their lives. Don’t forget your dog will need lots of reassurance when you take him away from his old home; he just sees a new and quite worrying place with none of his friends.
If you can fit it in, an ideal plan would be to visit your puppy or dog at his current home. When you start out discovering, ways to train a puppy the familiarity between you will result in a quicker learning experience. I appreciate this is not always possible so, perhaps you will be able to take something from the dog’s former home with you - like a blanket or toy of some kind or pretty much anything with the smell of his old home and help reassure him and survive the feeling of having nothing familiar in his life.
The perfect time to bring your new dog home is when you will be at home for a few days on the trot. This way you’ll always be there while he’s finding his feet. A summer vacation is perfect, but only if you can plan on being home for the summer. The more time you can spend with in these first few days the better. Spending lots of time with him when he moves in will pay dividends in building your relationship, and help him overcome any separation anxiety he may experience.
As humans, we prepare, decorate and equip the home for a new baby where we buy all the things we’ll need for the babies needs, training a puppy should be just as exciting. You should do the same for your new family member.
