Stranger but true: electricians and carpenters often have to work together

In these high-tech days, it is surprising how much we depend on the traditional tradesmen like carpenters, joiners, bricklayers, electricians and plumbers. Probably most people would want to rely on plumbers and electricians more than most other tradesmen; most people can do their own decorating and put up a shelf or two.

But if you need a lot of renovation in an old house, you will need to get a carpenter and electrician in. There are all sorts of reasons why you need these folk, but it may be to builod some shelves in alcoves or to replace some rotten wood in a highly visible area.

Also, the house probably needs fuse boxes removing, and new trip controls installing. More than likely if the house is 100 years old, it will need rewiring. It’s a no brainer: just find the best electrician you can. That means finding someone who is reliable, good at their job and not too expensive. This is not that easy. Electricians are in short supply, so they usually charge quite a lot for their services. However, for many jobs you have no choice because laws demand that you employ a certified electrician to do a lot of the electrical work you want done.

You can also bet that if you are renovating an old house, you will have some problems with the wood, even if there is not wood rot as such. So you start looking for carpenters and come across carpenters and joiners, and joiners. Confusing, isn’t it?

This is not so difficult as it sounds. A carpenter and joiner should be able to handle everything, but you are likely to pay carpenter’s rates. A joiner is fine if the work he does will be mostly hidden. If you want some intricate woodwork done though, find a carpenter.
